French innovation meets German engineering in a collaboration to set a new trend in the world of handbikes. CIXI, specialized in active mobility, and Stricker, pioneer in rehabilitation solutions, just launched the world’s first chainless handbike: the Smart Free.
For over 35 years, Stricker has been a driving force in adaptive mobility, known for its technical excellence and innovative spirit. Their latest creation, the Smart Free, is no exception: a chainless handbike that uses bike-by-wire technology to eliminate mechanical power transmission, opening new possibilities for users of all abilities.
Instead of relying on traditional chains and gears, the Smart Free features a generative crank unit that seamlessly converts human power into electricity, driving the motor and recharging the battery: no chain, no derailleur, no maintenance. Just a smooth, intuitive ride that adapts to the user’s needs, even allowing for electronic back-pedal braking.
Seamless integration of innovation
This technological leap wouldn’t have been possible without CIXI’s expertise in chainless pedaling systems. CIXI’s PERS technology, originally developed for e-bikes and active vehicles, now extends its benefits to handbikes, offering a tailor-made experience that blends comfort, performance, and accessibility.
“The biggest challenge was to create the first handbike,” Says Paul, the CIXI engineer who led the integration. “The haptics are very different from a regular bike. Pedals are parallel, so you only push about one-third of the rotation. The torque is slower, but with higher peaks. We had to adapt that to get a smooth start — it used to drift every five seconds.”
The Smart Free represents a shift towards more inclusive solutions for active mobility. With adjustable pedal resistance and customizable motor assistance, riders can find the perfect balance between effort and support.
“I was happy to work on this. I didn’t know I would do this when I started at CIXI, but I really enjoyed exploring this area. There’s still a lot to do in the handbike industry.
All the breakthrough tests we did with Stricker will help for other bikes and handbikes for disabled users. Stricker was the pioneer, and it opens the door for more innovation in this space.”
With the Smart Free, Stricker and CIXI are proving that innovation is not just about rethinking technology, it’s about transforming lives.
